The Erbil Policy Institute (EPI) is an independent research institute and think tank based in Ankara. With Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) as its primary areas of study, EPI conducts in-depth research on the region’s politics, foreign policy, economy, security, history, social conditions, and transformations. EPI examines not only Erbil-Baghdad relations but also the relations that Iraq and the KRI have developed with regional and international actors, particularly Türkiye. Through this approach, the Institute assesses the region from a holistic and broader perspective. EPI conducts interdisciplinary research in the fields of politics, foreign policy, economy, security, history, and society. It seeks to understand contemporary developments not merely through their outcomes but also through the historical continuities, institutional structures, and social dynamics that shape them. By combining the analytical tools of international relations with regional expertise and historical research, EPI produces academic analyses, reports, expert assessments, primary source studies, and publications focusing on the region’s social and cultural memory. Independence, scientific methodology, and intellectual pluralism form the foundation of EPI’s research approach. Based in Ankara and named after Erbil, the Institute goes beyond studying Iraq and the KRI solely from an external perspective. It seeks to understand and explain the region within the context of its own political, social, and historical dynamics while also examining the long-term transformation of Türkiye’s relations with the region.
